Description | A sweeping landscape at a high point of the Chisholm Trail in Jefferson County, Oklahoma. View the impact of the millions of cattle, horses and wagons that made way across the Chisholm Trail. Perfect for viewing sunrises, sunsets and storms if you are brave enough!
Read the story of the Trail at the base of this gigantic monument that is a tribute to those who came through here. It's also a tribute to those who died on the trail.
This hill served as a landmark for the drovers pushing cattle north across the Red River, from Texas to Oklahoma, during the Chisholm Trail cattle drive days in the 1860s because of the high point.
If you are heading north from Texas, make a right - go east - on the 'almost' last road (Eva Rd) before leaving town. Road travels upward and becomes a dirt road. You will see the monument on your right (about 3 miles from the highway), on the south side of the road. You can drive up to it and get out and walk around. Word of caution - try not to get caught in a storm out there. The road is difficult to drive when muddy.
If you are coming into Addington from Duncan, heading south, you will make a left hand turn at the first road before you enter the small town of Addington. Follow the same directions above for traveling east.
Note: This marker is on private land, but is open to the public. Great for Boy and Girl Scout troops to visit; and for anyone interested in the history of the Chisholm Trail and American West.
If you are coming in from Texas, be sure to head north to Duncan and stop in to see the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center. |
