Description | Girardet is the Umpqua Valley's oldest, continuously owned & operated family wine estate. Founders Philippe & Bonnie Girardet established this European-style wine estate in 1971. The vineyards are located on southwest facing slopes 18 miles southwest of Roseburg. The site features an ideal microclimate on the edge of the warmer interior Umpqua Valley and the cooler coastal mountain range.
Second generation Winemaker, Marc Girardet, was taught the family tradition of winemaking working alongside his father Philippe, and since 1999 has been carrying on the passion for handcrafting extraordinary wines with a touch of the Old World.
This charming, cedar-sided winery has a 12,000 case production capacity, and all wines are aged and bottled on the premises. The tasting room and picnic area are situated along the path of the historic Coos Bay Wagon Road. This road dates back to 1872 and was the first land route to connect the Umpqua Valley to Coos Bay.
The 40 acres of estate vineyards are farmed using sustainable techniques. Beneficial insects and cover crops are used to keep the vines healthy. Selected animals are also encouraged to live in the vineyards and keep pests away. Dry-farming techniques are used to produce small, flavor-packed berries and conserve water. The vines are always hand-harvested and hand-pruned. The adherence to these natural, Old World ways has led to the creation of many award-winning wines over the decades. |
